Well there has been a lot of change in the aesthetics industry over the last few months. We covered the tragic death of Sydney Beauty Therapist Jean Huang in the last issue and while we knew it was a major tipping point, nobody could foresee its far-reaching effects.

The NSW Ministry of Health is in the final stages of confirming changes that address ‘Regulatory rules for medicines commonly used in cosmetic procedures’. It has sought ‘preliminary consultation’ from key industry stakeholders on issues including teleconferencing; access and storage of Schedule 4 products; limitations on who may administer the products in the course of providing a service; and whether additional rules should be made in respect of any therapeutic good other than botulinum toxin and hyaluronic injections. The final responses from key stakeholders were due by 22 June.

One of the most contentious issues being discussed is teleconsulting. We have a comprehensive article on page 28 that addresses the debate of legality vs ethics. While patient safety is paramount, it appears that for some unscrupulous practitioners, profit before patients is the new mantra.

On another note, in response to complaints about so-called ‘stem cell’ treatments, the TGA is introducing new regulations regarding ‘biologicals’ and autologous HCT. In a nutshell, none of these products may be advertised to the public after 1 July 2018 and, while the service may be promoted, there are new regulations and guidelines that strictly control the parameters.
We also have an interesting article on page 26 on the direction of research on ground-breaking new cancer treatments; an overview of South Korea’s booming cosmetic surgery industry on page 122; and our top 10 luxury travel destinations to add to your bucket list on page 126. The World Cup is currently playing out on TVs all over the world while Russia is making the most of its centre stage role. On page 116 we detail the statistics from past World Cups and you can hone your skills for your next session of Sport Trivia.

As usual, we bring you the most comprehensive information on the products and services available in our industry, plus our Best Practice session includes advice on social media, managing your online reputation and business consulting.

The NSW Parliament/HCCC public hearing into ‘cosmetic health service complaints’ will take place on 2 August and we will report on the proceedings in the next issue.
