The times, they are a’changing, as Bob Dylan wrote, and this is being acutely felt in the cosmetic surgery sector. The past several months has shone the spotlight on the industry and led to sweeping reviews of the current system, putting greater emphasis on patient safety and protection.

NSW Health has recently published new guidelines for the management of breast implants to change the way that care is delivered. This is the first time any state has had a comprehensive breast implant guide for doctors – including what they are expected to do and how they are expected to behave – made available in a public document, and many industry leaders are hopeful it could pave the way for the national regulator AHPRA to assess whether doctors are operating within accepted standards of care. You can read more about the ‘Toolkit’ on page 46.

Further, a new report published by ARPANSA warns that, while treatments such as laser hair removal and IPL skin rejuvenation are growing in popularity, they result in high non-ionising radiation and consequently a risk of adverse effects that consumers may not be aware of. The Agency has published new national advice for both consumers and service providers, which you can read on page 38.

Change is also afoot in medical advertising, with the TGA issuing a lengthy updated clarification of exactly what is, and is not, permitted to be published as a testimonial in ads about therapeutic goods. Read more about the updated guidance on page 32.

As we start replacing Zoom with in-person events and seeing our colleagues “IRL” again, the past few months have been, happily, jam-packed with industry events once more. We highlight some of these in our Events section, beginning on page 54, and showcase the latest products and technologies being launched into the Australian and New Zealand markets.

I trust you will enjoy reading this issue and learning more about the important developments and innovations in our industry.
