Cosmetic Surgery Magazine - Issue 40 | Letter From the Editor
Michelle Kearney
Editor-In-Chief
|
Ten years on and I am still impressed with the way the field of cosmetic enhancement constantly re-invents itself in line with advances in technology. Over the last decade the major changes have been mainly centred on new devices and products. For example, in our early issues in 1998, the debate was raging over whether carbon dioxide or erbium laser was better employed for facial skin resurfacing. This year our pages are filled with impressive new devices for resurfacing the skin with no ablation and virtually no down time or discomfort.
Trends have changed as well. More and younger patients are lining up for less invasive procedures with minimal recovery time, to improve their appearance. In 1998 in the United States, the top five minimally invasive procedures were: Retin A (106,862), chemical peels (66,002), laser skin resurfacing (55,623), collagen injections (45,851) and forehead lifts (36,777). Last year they were: Botox (4,600,000), hyaluronic acid treatments (1,051,000), chemical peels (1,025,000), laser hair removal (906,000) and microdermabrasion (897,000).
These figures take a while to sink in, but two new products since 1998, botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid injections, accounted for a whopping 5,651,000 procedures last year alone. Overall, there has been a 750 percent increase in non-invasive procedures over the last 10 years.
There is no denying that cosmetic enhancement has been embraced by the masses and is now considered mainstream. What once raised eyebrows and gave gossip columnists fodder is now considered routine as people are becoming more accepting.
On the surgical front, technical advances and refined techniques have broadened the choices of treatments that also deliver better outcomes. This issue includes several features on innovations that range from improved breast reconstruction for cancer patients to the spiral buttock and thigh lift.
As well as all our usual features, in this special issue you can look over some articles from the last 10 years of ACSM. You can also read about my philosophy and passion for providing prospective patients with an authoritative resource and research tool.
As part of our 10-year anniversary celebration we are giving readers over $100,000 in gifts. Turn to page 206 to see how you can receive some of this booty. We are also running a special subscription offer – pay for one year and receive another year free. Turn to page 259 to take advantage of this, or log on to cosmeticsurgerymagazine.com.au
Lastly, a big thank you to all those readers who filled in the survey from last issue. We are thrilled to receive so many responses and will provide a detailed report in the next issue.
